A Call for Reflection, Prevention, and Safer Roads

Cause of Anthony Joshua crash revealed after two killed on 'one of Nigeria's deadliest roads'

A Call for Reflection, Prevention, and Safer Roads

Recent tragic events on our roads have once again brought into sharp focus the high human cost of road traffic incidents in Nigeria. Two young lives have been lost — a sobering reminder that beyond headlines and public attention lie families, futures, and communities forever altered.

At the Dr Tunde Aladesanmi Foundation for Road Safety (DTAF), our position is clear and consistent: road traffic injuries and deaths are largely preventable, and every incident must strengthen our collective resolve to reduce avoidable loss of life.

It is important to state unequivocally that investigations into the circumstances surrounding this incident are ongoing, and many facts remain unknown. As such, DTAF does not seek to speculate, apportion blame, or be drawn into controversy. Respect for due process, the rule of law, and all affected parties must remain paramount.

We acknowledge and commend the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for their prompt response, provision of emergency care, and timely evacuation of casualties to the hospital. First responders play a critical role in reducing fatalities, and continued investment in emergency response capacity is essential.

The involvement of a high-profile public figure has inevitably drawn national and international attention to this incident. We choose to view this moment not through the lens of personality, but as an opportunity — an opportunity for renewed government focus, public engagement, and meaningful investment in road infrastructure, enforcement, driver education, vehicle safety standards, and post-crash care.

Road safety is not about individuals; it is about systems. Safe roads, safe vehicles, safe speeds, safe road users, and effective emergency response together save lives.

In memory of those lost, and in honour of all families affected by road traffic crashes daily across Nigeria, DTAF renews its commitment to advocacy, education, and partnership with relevant authorities. Our mission remains simple but urgent: to ensure that fewer families receive the devastating knock on the door.

Let this moment strengthen our shared determination to make Nigeria’s roads safer — for everyone
